Multiscale and Multidirectional Biomedical Texture Analysis Finding the Needle in the Haystack

چکیده
This chapter clarifies the important aspects of biomedical texture analysis under the general framework introduced in Chapter 1. It was proposed that any approach can be characterized as the combination of local texture operators and regional aggregation functions. The type of scale and directional information that can or cannot be modeled by categories of texture processing methods is revealed through theoretic analyses and experimental validations. Several key aspects are found to be commonly overlooked in the literature and are highlighted. First, we demonstrate the risk of using regions of interest for aggregation that are regrouping tissue types of different natures. Second, a detailed study of the type of directional information important for biomedical texture characterization suggests that fundamental properties lie in the local organization of image directions. In addition, it was found thatmost approaches cannot efficiently characterize the latter, and even fewer can do it with invariance to local rotations. We conclude by deriving novel comparison axes to evaluate the relevance of biomedical texture analysis methods in a specific medical or biological applicative context.

Finding a Needle in a Haystack: An Image Processing Approach
Image segmentation (also known as object/edge detection) is the process of dividing an image into its constituent parts using information about the boundaries between objects, edges within objects, variations in intensity, et cetera. Often, the human eye can easily recognize salient information from an image; however, background variations in intensity, noise and other degradations, and other h...

Introduction: A major problem facing the patients with chronic liver diseases is the diagnostic procedure. The conventional diagnostic method depends mainly on needle biopsy which is an invasive method. There are some approaches to develop a reliable noninvasive method of evaluating histological changes in sonograms. The main characteristic used to distinguish between the normal...
متن کاملA Novel Noise-Robust Texture Classification Method Using Joint Multiscale LBP
In this paper we describe a novel noise-robust texture classification method using joint multiscale local binary pattern. The first step in texture classification is to describe the texture by extracting different features. So far, several methods have been developed for this topic, one of the most popular ones is Local Binary Pattern (LBP) method and its variants such as Completed Local Binary...
متن کاملMultiscale Analysis of Transverse Cracking in Cross-Ply Laminated Beams Using the Layerwise Theory
A finite element model based on the layerwise theory is developed for the analysis of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminated beams. The numerical model is developed using the layerwise theory of Reddy, and the von Kármán type nonlinear strain field is adopted to accommodate the moderately large rotations of the beam. The finite element beam model is verified by comparing the present numeric...
